Give your time to help a child.
We would love for every child we serve to be paired with a volunteer. It’s an opportunity for you to make a huge impact on a child’s life and education. You get to be involved in their lives as an encouraging and positive role model, whether as a lunch buddy, tutor, or classroom assistant.
3 Ways to Volunteer
- Lunch Buddy: Provide a mentoring friendship for a child. Each volunteer is assigned a student to be their “buddy.” The volunteer comes to school once a week to have lunch with their buddy, talk, play games or read. This usually can be done in no more than 1 hour-perfect for a lunch break!
- Tutor: Assist students with homework, study for a test or develop their reading and/or math skills. Each tutor visits their assigned student weekly, witnessing the effect their participation has on the student’s educational progress.
- Classroom Assistant: Come to an assigned class once a week for 1-2 hours and assist the teacher in facilitating classroom activities. Responsibilities include individual tutoring, leading small group learning activities, art projects, checking papers and other helpful tasks.
To volunteer for the 2018-2019 school year, your first step is to complete a new volunteer application form. All New Student Support Volunteers are also required to complete a CMS background check and attend an orientation at the A Child’s Place office. A link to sign up for orientation is provided once you’ve completed the new volunteer application.
Per CMS policy, to volunteer you must be 18 years or older and no longer a student in high school, middle school, or elementary school.
At this time, we have completed our fall 2018 orientations and will not pick back up until January 2019. If you complete the application, you will get an email once those dates have been set and you are able to sign up.
If you are a returning volunteer (from the 2017-18 school year) please complete a returning volunteer application. If it has been longer than two years since you attended an orientation, you must fill out the new student support volunteer form above.
